Job Shadow Program

Students will complete steps required to organize a job shadowing experience based on their identified vocational interests with teacher assistance as needed.


Program Goals

Students will obtain the knowledge, attitudes, work behaviors and skills to make a successful transition from school to the real world. Students will complete activities to help them recognize their interests, skills and abilities. Students will learn the importance of work and independence.

Job Setting

Instruction takes place in the actual setting in which the skill being trained is actually performed. A job analysis will be conducted to asses the job situation with employers to arrange specific duties, schedules, and equipment for the student to be most productive, safe and satisfied. The community becomes an extension of the classroom.


Often, students select careers because the work sounds interesting, looks glamorous, or pays well. Job Shadow enables wise career choices as students experience the authentic environment of the work place, explore the requirements of the job, and compare actual experience to their expectations. It is a way to discover the "real world" of work.

Employment Processes

Students will complete forms associated with job seeking skills, including filling out job application forms, listing references and resume preparation. Through role playing practice and classroom instruction, students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of important considerations in the employment process.

Examples of work ethic awareness include: punctuality, appearance, polite greetings, honesty in communication, asking questions, showing interest and pride in accomplishments, and developing personal goals.

Communication Skills

Students will participate in work experiences and will demonstrate progress on the student performance evaluation. Students will increase independence on assigned tasks and will increase basic language concepts and communication skills. Students will work, learn, recreate, and socialize with others on the job.

Job Shadow Community Partnership

  • Actual workplace experience for vocational exploration, assessment, or training under supervision of school personnel.
  • Students are fully informed of the placement,participate voluntarily, and are not entitled to wages.
  • Students are under supervision by school or business employees.
  • Students cannot work in hazardous jobs.
  • Liability for students is covered by the school district.
